...Even among lay people who do not know Dharma and have never had any experience of Dharma, when the thought of the next life arises in their minds, or when they see their life-partner die and so on, they spontaneously remember the Mani Mantra {Om Mani Padme Hum} and recite it hundreds, thousands and tens of thousands of times, as when a child is afraid and starts calling for his mother. By just reciting the Mani mantra many benefits occur, such as: in this lifetime the force of one's unvirtuous action's will decrease; one will have a long life and will face less harmful circumstances; blind people will start to see; people will be released from harmful spirits; they will have generations of auspicious descendants and will see manifestations of Avalokitesvara in dreams. At the time of death the consciousness will be transferred to pure lands by the sound of the six-syllable or Mani mantra. So, of course, whoever does practice on Avalokitesvara properly will achieve the accomplishments. In Tibet there are children who,before being able to say their mother's name, clearly pronounce the /mani mantra. So, for many reasons it is clear that for Tibetans there is a more special connection with Avalokitesvara than with any other Buddhas or Bodhisattvas.
